石雕佛像通常采用的材质为花岗岩和大理石两种，少数石雕佛像会采用砂岩来雕刻，以砂岩壁雕、砂岩浮雕为主。不同的材质雕刻出来的佛像雕塑，保存时间长短各有差异。

作为高密度的花岗岩，质地坚硬，抗腐蚀、耐风化，保存时间、雕塑原本的面貌保存度是这三种材质中最好的一种，但雕刻难度也最高。大理石，比如汉白玉石雕像、米黄石雕产品，天生自带网状纹路，密度相对花岗岩稍小，但也异常坚固、风吹雨打都不怕。而砂岩，石质较粗、较松，所以常用作墙饰面，虽然也有石头抗腐蚀、耐风化的特点，但是相比上两种石质来说，其要完好的保存原本面貌，时间要较短很多。
