佛像雕塑常指的是释迦牟尼、十八罗汉、观音菩萨、弥勒、胁侍等雕塑，这些佛像雕塑虽然有据可考，但终究是神话人物故事中的形象，他们的外观经过不同的群体按照心中所想，依据个人想象所描绘出来的，所以各地的观音佛像也好，弥勒佛像再或是至高无上的释迦牟尼佛如来像，都会略有差异。在采用天然石材雕刻佛像时，每一尊佛像雕刻出来的样子都会有所差异，这并不能说明是厂家雕刻师傅的技艺不行，而是参考的资料各有所异而已。

普通人像雕塑的都是历史人物或是现代人物，有着明确的照片或历史资料可以参考，外观形象无从修饰。正因如此，在雕塑现代人像的时候，对于相似度的要求很高，身体服饰也无过多的配饰任由想象、添加。所以呢，同样是一个孔子雕像，众厂雕刻出来的雕像必然大体相同，不同的是细致度或是一些细节处理方面。
